Walter’s Dining Hall, located inside The Royal Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula, is a vibrant, Asian-influenced restaurant where elevated dining meets the atmosphere of a high-energy discotheque. The concept is inspired by a nostalgic love for family dinners in Chinese restaurants during the 1980s, brought to life through bold interiors, lavish cocktails, and a fun, immersive experience. The team approached us to create a custom neon sign that would reflect the venue’s unique identity while adding to its already distinctive aesthetic.

The Challenge
Walter’s was looking for a sign that would enhance the mood of their carefully curated dining space which was intended to feel intimate yet energetic, romantic yet lively. The sign needed to reflect the fun and flirtatious tone of the brand while sitting comfortably within a space that blended bold Asian influences with a vibrant late-night energy. It had to become a central visual feature that would excite guests without feeling intrusive or overdesigned.

The Solution
To help achieve their desired atmosphere, we proposed a design that would complement the layered aesthetic of the venue and create a memorable moment within the space. The phrase “Take Me to The Walter’s” struck the perfect balance between cheeky and charming, and the sign’s placement, scale, and glow were all considered to ensure it felt cohesive within the setting. Our focus was on helping the sign contribute to the overall mood of the dining hall while reinforcing the personality of the brand.

The Results
The completed sign measured 60cm x 51cm and brought exactly the kind of character the team at Walter’s was hoping for. Its soft yet striking glow added a sense of romance and energy to the space, creating a warm visual anchor that instantly caught the attention of guests. Now installed in the dining hall, the sign enhances the immersive dining experience, serving as both a design feature and a playful nod to the spirit of the venue.

The Customisations

What truly made the Walter’s sign stand out was how it supported the venue’s vision of an intimate yet lively setting. Here are the custom features that made the sign so special:

Typography Style: The flowing, handwritten-style lettering created a sense of movement and softness that balanced perfectly with the vibrant energy of the space. It added a personal, romantic feel while still drawing the eye.

Acrylic Backing: The sign was mounted on a cut-around acrylic backboard that followed the exact shape of the text, ensuring a clean and refined silhouette. This gave the sign a sleek finish and helped it integrate seamlessly with the surrounding decor.

Installation Options: We provided both screw fixings and steel wire. This versatility and freedom meant that the Walters didn’t need to worry because the sign could be installed either way.
